Areola and nipple micropigmentation is a specialty area of medical tattooing, now this enhancement is a form of cosmetic tattooing not only for breast cancer survivors, but also for those who have had reconstruction surgery or have fading areola and/or irregular areolas/nipples. The procedure is using tattoo techniques and pigments to create the illusion of realistic areolas and nipples. Shading, shadows and other artistic skills will be used to make the tattoos look like real areolas and nipples on the breast or chest. Shapes and colors are customized for the individual.

What to expect after the 3D Areola Nipple Tattooing?

Tattoo area will go through several phases during the healing cycle

Day 1(treatment day): The areola(s) are approximately 20% to 25% darker and bolder in width than when healed. Color appears dark because the skin is irritated and pigments oxidation. You may experience minor discomfort or tingling, this will disappear in a few hours. Swelling will subside.

Day 2: Conditions remain the same as day 1. Fluid( lymph fluid or blood) may build up underneath the dressing, it is normal.

Day 3: Treatment area starts to flake, possible itchy.

Day 4-7: Exfoliation is in process, color will soften and appear more natural-looking after all scabs flake off.

Day 8-14: Treatment area can be dry, please keep using moisturizer.

Pre-procedure of the appointment:

  • Make sure you are feeling well.
  • Never discontinue use of any medication that has been prescribed by your physician without his/her consent and inform your technician in the event continued use is required.
  • Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, fish oil or any other blood thinners in one week.
  • Avoid alcohol within 24 hours of your procedure.
  • Avoid any caffeine the day of your appointment.

After Care:

Day 1-7:

  • The Tegaderm plastic dressing will be placed on the tattoo area after the procedure. Leave the same dressing on for 7 days. Tegaderm is a breathable, waterproof, sterile barrier to protect the new tattoo.
  • Shower normally with the Tegaderm on. Warm and short shower is suggested.

Day 7:

  • Gently peel off the Tegaderm, get in a warm shower, rinse the tattoo with warm water and soap, Example of antibacterial soap: Dial, Dove, Cetaphil.
  • After shower, sit topless and let the tattoo area air dry for 1 hour.
  • Apply a thin layer of healing cream.
  • Take a photo of the tattoo and send it to Jenny to determine if further touch up is needed.

Day 8-14: Keep applying a thin layer healing cream morning and night, twice per day with a clean fingertip.

General care guidelines:

  • Don’t swim in the ocean, soak in a pool, bath, or hot tub until your tattoo fully heals, normally it takes about 14 days.
  • No heavy work out (such as run, hot yoga, cycle for 48 hours. If you are in physical therapy, it’s ok to continue after the procedure.
  • Warm water shower and shorter shower is the best. Because hot water may cause the covering to peel off easily.
  • You can wear a bra at any time.
  • Don’t pick the scabs.

When to call your healthcare provider

Please call your healthcare provider if you have any of these issues:

  • A fever of 101° F (38.3° C) or higher.

Increasing pain, swelling, redness, excessive tenderness around the tattoo area.

Do Areola Tattoos hurt?:

The pain of the tattoo is mild because reconstructed breast tissue loses most of the sanitation. Topical anesthetic will apply on the tattoo area if necessary.

Can I choose the color and size of the areola or nipple?

The process begins with a consultation, we will discuss your desired outcome and assess your suitability for the process. The areola will be drawn on to assess its size and location in relation to the entire breast. Color is mixed for the individual.

Do areola tattoo affect breastfeeding?

It is generally assumed that ink molecules are too large to pass into breastmilk during the tattoo process. Once injected into the skin the ink is trapped, however it is unknown whether the ink can pass into breastmilk as it slowly breaks down in the body months to years later.

What are the ingredients of the ink?

The premium ingredients are a blend of powdered pigments, sterile aqua, rosin, glycerin, witch hazel, isopropyl alcohol, and benzyl alcohol. They are always sterile, vegan, and cruelty-free. Does World Famous Tattoo Ink contain titanium dioxide? Yes.

Will I need another touch up session?

The procedure is usually completely done in one session, however, in certain situations, you may require an additional session depending on the individual healing process. If a touch up is necessary, you will need to return in 4-6 weeks.

How long does the procedure take?

The whole procedure is two hours.
